A state police K-9 was killed in the line of duty in the North Country.

The incident happened late Monday night as state troopers were conducting a search warrant at a home along Woodcreek Road in the town of Greig.

Investigators say a pit bull came running out of the home and attacked the dog, named Will. The dog's partner shot the pit bull in the leg, but the bullet ricocheted and hit the K-9. Will was taken to a Lowville veterinary clinic, where he died.

Will was named after Trooper William Doyle, who was killed by escapees from a mental institution in 1967.

Monday's incident is still under investigation.
