ENFIELD, N.C. -- Two new suspects were in court Tuesday for the murder of two elderly Halifax County couples.

James Powell, 25, and Keyon West, 23, are charged with the murders of 76-year-old James Whitely, 67-year-old Peggy Jo Whitley, 88-year-old James Harris and 72-year-old Janice Harris as they were playing cards in August at the Harris home.

Additionally, Powell is facing charges in connection with another murder that occurred in Roanoke Rapids, of Travis Johnson.

Powell and West, as well as Matthew Simms, who was charged with the murders last October, could all face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

Police previously stated that the murders may be gang-related.
