The New York City Marathon will go on as planned.

Organizers are delaying the ceremonial painting of the blue line out of respect for the victims of Tuesday's terror attack in Lower Manhattan.

Starting Thursday, all events leading up to the race will go on as scheduled.

Some of the best runners in the world will join New Yorkers for the 26.2-mile race Sunday morning.

The city police department said runners and spectators can expect a heavy police presence along the route and event venues.

The support to have the race this year stood in stark contrast to five years ago.

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg pushed forward with the marathon. It was not until an intense backlash from the public did he decide to cancel the race.

This year is not the same. NY1 was told that Mayor Bill de Blasio did not even consider canceling the event.

Officials also said organizers, the police department, and City Hall are in constant communication about keeping the event safe.
