Accused Mexican drug lord "El Chapo" is scheduled to appear in federal court in Brooklyn Wednesday.

It's for a status conference to discuss legal issues with his new lawyer.

Joaquin Guzman requested new representation over the summer.

He has escaped from prison twice in Mexico, and was extradited to the U.S. in January.

Guzman has pleaded not guilty to charges of running a drug trafficking cartel that laundered billions of dollars and oversaw murders and kidnappings.

If convicted, he faces life in prison.
