Fixing up homes in Austin may become faster and cheaper.

The city council wants to create two processes for building permits; one for commercial developers and another for homeowners.

Currently, everyone goes through the same process which can take weeks or months for simple projects to be approved.

The Development Services Department's made strides in improving turnaround time over the past couple years, but city leaders said the projects are apples and oranges.

"If you are a homeowner or simply trying to stay in place, house an aging parent, create some additional income for your family, house a family member, then you should be in a different lane,” said city councilor, Delia Garza.

Fees will also be reviewed, and possibly reduced. Homeowners say permits for some projects like replacing a sliding glass door cost more than the door itself.
