Tuesday started like any other day at Daryll's Car Audio on Union Road. But around 2:45 p.m., things quickly changed when a worker saw what was unfolding across the street.

"Chris here was the one who yelled shots fired. We came and looked out the window. We saw an individual across the street at Dollar General shooting at the front of the store," said Mark Pinnavaia, the owner of Daryll's Car Audio.

Chris Kaufmann then called 911, while Mark ran to his car.

"At one point, he put the gun down. He picked it back up again. He put it down again. Then he got far enough away from the gun that I actually felt I had a chance. At that point, I put my car in drive and I proceeded to drive as fast as I could to hit the individual. I had full intentions to hit him if that's what it took to stop him," said Pinnavaia.

Kaufmann added, "I stood behind another car, realized there was people in it, so I told them to go back behind the building. Then I waited behind another car here for cover. And then as soon as he started going, I started running behind him. In those situations, I don't think you really feel fear. You just do. You just act. It's all adrenaline. It's all just go."

Pinnavaia ended up clipping the man, who police have identified as 29-year-old Travis Green. Then both Pinnavaia and Kaufmann were on foot, chasing Green down.

"I was probably five feet behind him at the closing point. And the entire time, I was focused basically on his feet, just running my tail off to get after him. Once we got up the crest of the hill, he jumped the guardrail. I looked up and I saw Cheektowaga police there with guns drawn. I instantly stopped and put my hands in the air," said Pinnavaia.

Cheektowaga police are calling the two men heroes, but say they just reacted to the situation.

"I don't think it's about being a hero. It's about doing what you need to do. You just do it. You don't think about it. You just do it," said Kaufmann.

"I don't consider us to be heroes. The heroes are the men and women in law enforcement and the military. That's who keeps America safe and who keeps us safe. We're two civilians in the right spot at the right time," said Pinnavaia.

Cheektowaga police say without a doubt, the two men saved lives.
