SAN MARCOS, Texas — As the San Marcos Police Department comes to terms with the  tragedy it’s been hit with, deputies from the Hays County Sheriff's office came to show their support Monday night.

City leaders also say they're committed to celebrating Officer Copeland's life and legacy.

"And something like this happens there's nothing bottom line there are no words that can be expressed. There's nothing that we can say. As the mayor noted we have to band together. We have to appreciate the fine men and women that are out there serving the public's interest. They are simply trying to protect us from harm," said City Manager Bert Lumbreras.

After a press conference was held late Monday, we learned that Ken Copeland was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the city's history — That's the reason the police chief says they're not accustomed to this.

The chief said he's grateful for the region's critical incident stress management team, which he says has been mobilized. He says expects them to stay busy for the next few weeks.

And while city leaders remain speechless at tonight's tragedy, they say they're committed to celebrating Copeland's life and legacy.

"And something like this happens there's nothing bottom line there are no words that can be expressed. There's nothing that we can say. As the mayor noted we have to band together. A thin blue line has been added to the San Marcos police badge in the department's lobby.
