HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Members of High Point City Council are ready to get started on a downtown baseball stadium.

The local government commission in Raleigh approved issuing almost $35 million towards the construction of the stadium.

Back in September, the council asked Guilford County Commissioners to help pay for the ballpark.

Commissioner Skip Alston says the city obviously doesn't need the county to move forward with their plans.

"When you say you already have the funds and you're going to do it with or without the Guilford County Commissioners, then we have an option at that point to say, 'Well if you can do it without us, why would we want to give you funds if you don't need it,'" said Alston.

He also says the money that the board was going to put towards the stadium can now go towards the school system, health department and other needs of the High Point community.
