DURHAM -- The Durham Department of Water Management accidentally stopped providing water to a bill-paying customer on Wednesday for several hours.

Trudy Lucas says her son noticed their faucets weren't working around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. However, Lucas had just paid her water bill, and the water department meant to cut off the water to a different house.

Lucas says she was unable to get through to the water department to turn her water back on and had to resort to calling 911 for assistance around 7 p.m.

The water department gave Lucas a $25 voucher for her water bill, but she says that hardly makes up for what she went through.

"They need to do a better job," said Lucas. "They need to hold people accountable, have checks and balances, and know when they're cutting off someone's address that they're at the correct house."

In a response e-mailed to Lucas the day after the incident, the Department of Water Managment apologized. They said, "Management will be investigating this incident and take action as we agree this is not acceptable customer service and should not be repeated."
