NEW YORK -- One of the largest diamonds in the world just sold for $6.5 million.

This egg sized, 709 carat gem is the 14th largest in the world. Luxury Jeweler, Laurence Graff, won the bid.

It's called the "peace diamond" because most of the proceeds from  the sale will go to the village in Sierra Leone, where it was found. The Sierra government was actually hoping it would sell for more. They rejected a previous bid of $7.8 million.

Experts said it just wasn't the right time to sell, since this is not peak season for the diamond market.
