It was a frigid start to Wednesday around the Carolinas. Piedmont lows were well down into the 20s with teens and a few single digits were widespread in the mountains.

In spite of a good deal of sun today, highs will struggle to hit the 38-40 degree range. Lows will drop into the upper 20s for most areas tonight.

Highs will then rebound into the 40s Thursday through Saturday.

Our next storm system is due in later Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. By the time that system arrives, this cold airmass will have moderated enough that it will just be a rain event for the region.

Highs will warm a bit more -- into the 50s -- early next week.

Check out today's video for some thoughts on the longer-range pattern through Christmas.
