WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem area Salvation Army is helping thousands of families with their annual Angel Tree Program. Volunteers hand out bags to almost 100 cars per hour at Trade St. and 9th St. in Winston-Salem for three days, from Wednesday through Friday this week.

Families in need register for the program ahead of time and based on their circumstances they will get a bag of presents for children in their family.

Major Stan Colbert, area commander for Winston-Salem Salvation Army, says, "Every year, the Salvation Army all over the country has this angel tree program. We'll take care of a little over 5,000 kids at Christmas time. It's pretty fun!"

His daughter, Cali Colbert, is the Christmas coordinator and one of many volunteers says she feels the program truly makes a difference. She says, "We have a lot of kids that wouldn't receive Christmas presents otherwise. That's why we do what we do."

The program will go on through noon on Friday. The Salvation Army will still have toys available for any families who missed their pick-up time slot.
