If you're considering last-minute gift ideas, maybe keep in mind what NOT to buy before the holiday.

There’s a whole range of items customers can get better deals on, by waiting.

Jewelry

Better deals are likely to pop up in February for Valentines Day and in the lead up to Mother’s Day.

“You'll also start to see some deals on engagement rings about april and may as people begin to pop the question during the summer months,” host & producer of Retail Focus Podcast Trent Kling said.

Linens

January is the season for ‘white sales’.

“In part because there were basically textile retailers that found it slow setting in January," Kling said.

‘White sales’ are deals on linens like towels, bedding, and sheets to clear inventory.

Winter Clothes

Winter clearance starts as soon as the week after Christmas to make room for Spring lines.

“And I think one retailer that fits that mold is Dillards,” Kling said. “As their total inventory in their stores has gone up over the last few years."

Exercise Equipment

"Retailers know people want to keep up on their New Year’s resolutions and they want to try and get to them while that's top of mind,” Kling said.

Just like gym membership promotions, brick and mortar sporting goods stores will have some of the biggest deals in January.

Cars

For people thinking of a new car as a Christmas gift; end of the month deals up to New Year’s Eve can be just as good, if not better, than buying before Christmas.
