Under the current state law, private schools are not required to report child abuse at the hands of teachers.

Now, lawmakers are pushing to close that loophole.

A new bill looks to expand the list of institutions required to report abuse allegations.

If passed, that list would also make more people in schools responsible for reporting abuse accusations.

That includes speech-language pathologists, school resource officers and anyone contracted to drive for a school.

State lawmakers say the proposal is in response to an independent report from Nichols School in Buffalo.

The report alleges 10 teachers had inappropriate relations with students dating back to the 1970s.

The report also claims three top Nichols leaders knew about the claims and failed to investigate them.
