RALEIGH -- A Senate version of a GenX bill was approved out of a committee Wednesday evening.

That bill calls for more than $2 million in additional funding to deal with the problem of possible water supply contamination by the chemical GenX.

The state has been investigating the Chemours plant in Bladen County after it was determined that the company had sent the chemical into the Cape Fear River as part of its wastewater discharge.

Since that time, over 150 private wells near the plant have tested positive for high levels of GenX which, while its effects on humans remains unknown, has been found to cause tumors in laboratory animals.

Some senators on the committee felt that a House version of this bill is better equipped to deal with the problem.
