Children on Staten Island are honoring an African-American artist during Black History Month.

Children of all ages learned about the late painter Alma Thomas at the Staten Island Children's Museum on Sunday.

Thomas was the first African-American woman to receive a solo exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan.

Using colorful construction paper, young artists were able to create their own versions of Thomas's abstract paintings.

"Our hope for them is that they can learn about different cultures, about different artists and different ways to create art using different types of mediums," said an organizer.

The Staten Island Children's Museum is offering free admission for President's Day on Monday from 10 AM to 5 PM.
