ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging the federal government to exempt New York State from the Trump administration's plan to expand offshore oil and gas drilling.

In a letter sent to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, Cuomo says the Republican administration's drilling plan "is trampling on the interests of New Yorkers and threatening the future wellbeing of our state."

Cuomo is the most recent in a series of governors on the east coast to seek such exemptions. Only Florida has been granted one.

The Interior Department had no immediate response.
